Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

A practical evidence-informed therapeutic approach

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, or CBT, is a practical, evidence-informed therapeutic approach that helps people understand the connections among their thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and behaviours.

When life feels overwhelming, it can be easy to get caught in patterns that happen almost automatically. A thought such as “I am failing,” “I cannot cope,” or “I should be doing more” can quickly lead to guilt, anxiety, frustration, or shutdown. Those feelings can then influence how we respond to ourselves, our children, our partner, or the demands of everyday family life.

CBT helps slow this process down. Instead of simply reacting to what is happening, therapy creates space to notice the thoughts and beliefs sitting underneath the reaction. Together, we look at whether those thoughts are helpful, accurate, protective, old, or connected to past experiences. This is not about forcing positive thinking or pretending everything is fine. It is about understanding the patterns that may be keeping you stuck and beginning to respond with more awareness and choice.

For mothers, CBT can be especially helpful

For mothers and parents, CBT can be especially helpful when guilt, self-criticism, anxiety, anger, or overwhelm have become part of daily life. It can help you to notice the internal messages that appear in difficult moments, such as when your child is having a tantrum, when the house feels chaotic, or when you feel like you have nothing left to give.

CBT can also be used to develop practical strategies. This may include learning how to challenge unhelpful thoughts, manage worry, understand emotional triggers, build coping skills, and take small steps toward change.

CBT is not used as a rigid set of techniques

In my work, CBT is not used as a rigid set of techniques. It is applied within the context of your real life, your family, your relationships, your responsibilities, and your history. The aim is to help things feel clearer and more manageable, so you can move away from automatic reactions and toward responses that feel calmer, more connected, and more aligned with the person and parent you want to be.
